Lulu’s Bathroom Demolition

Today, I am feeling satisfied as I unwind and regroup from a month-long bathroom renovation with the sweet and stylish Lulu of Lulusfashionpick. You can see the Inspiration for her beautiful classic bath renovation here and see all the inspiring pics on our shared pinboard.

When the demolition began just about everything in the bathroom changed. If you have ever wondered about the process of renovating a bath from start to finish…here…we…go!

First, we removed all the shower and tub surround completely and lined the shower with green-board, a type of waterproof drywall that is essential in showers and baths. Suddenly, the space appeared to be twice the size without the metal framing and the tub.

I provided quick sketches in 1/4″ scale including a space plan and lighting plan for the contractors to follow. In red, I drew in the recessed lights and switches.

We removed the original vanity, lighting, and recessed medicine cabinet.

Next, our contractor hot mopped the shower surround further waterproofing the space, a final preparation before the concrete could be skimmed on to the walls and floor. It was exciting to watch the changes day by day. Did I mention that I loved working with the contractor? He was always on time, hardworking and helped to keep us on budget throughout the project.

The highlight of the demolition was watching the tile work put in place. The tile craftsman was so artful cutting the 3″ tiles for the edging and 5″ tile to become the baseboard as well. Later, he buffed and polished the edges of the tile for a bullnose curved finishing.

Once the tiling was complete, they began to focus on the plaster and detailing of the space. I leave with a shot of the Pigeon Gray paint that we chose to accent the room!

I just couldn’t wait to see the room without the drop cloth covering the floor and the plastic liner totally removed from the shower…

I plan to post the final pictures of the room next week! You can see a sneak peak of the vanity and sconces over on Instagram of this truly unique and classic space that has been a JOY to design. Until then, please share, what is your favorite tiling material and paint for bath? Anything finishes that you are dying to experiment with?

Happy Monday~ Hope you had a joyful and inspiring holiday weekend.

Lulu’s Bathroom: Before Demolition

I felt honored when my friend Lulu and her husband asked me to work with her on customizing her Dream Bathroom in her new condo near the beach.

Their home is really perfect: modern, fresh white paint, a great location, and hardwood floors!

The bathroom was functional and move-in-ready. I liked that the shower and tub surround were clean and white. As a designer, the bathroom was an empty canvas.

We made plans to transform and customize the space from the floors to the ceiling. From the dark slate floor tiles to the time worn vanity, which made the room appear outdated…

The lighting fixtures and mirrors were basic and lacked originality…since Lulu has great taste, they were just too simple for her liking!

Here is a running list of the things we are removing:

  • Mirrors
  • All lighting fixtures
  • Noisy ceiling fan
  • Shower enclosure
  • Bathtub
  • Shower head
  • Sink vanity and faucet
  • Floor Tiling
  • Shower bar and Accessories
As you can see form this list, that’s basically everything!

Follow our daily sneak peaks via Instagram, where you can see materials, fixtures, and demo pics.

Please stop by and see all of our inspiration for tile layout and design on our ever-evolving shared pin board!

You will see how they all come together in our new bathroom design.

Happy Wednesday~ thanks for looking!

For more process pictures, check back weekly:)
