Modern Classic Guest Room

It has been a fun and rewarding project working with my client Paul, on his guest bedroom this month. He wanted to create a classically inspired, comfortable and modern space for his many guests to enjoy on their visits to L.A. Our original concept began with a black and white palette and a hint of Hollywood charm.

You may be surprised at the difference that we made by simply changing the lighting, headboard and focal point in the space. I call this a bedroom reinvented! One major change was in the overhead lighting. Although, I wasn’t sure about orb chandelier in the bedroom at first, I absolutely love it over the bed. I see how visually light and stunning it feels.

Another favorite accent that I added are the classic swing arm brass sconces placed by the new gray linen tufted headboard. The warm gold and the cool gray-blue are the perfect color combination!

The gray linen headboard was special ordered and a great price for it’s quality. Both Paul and I liked the sophistication of the winged sides with the silver nail head finish. The pillows and sheets layer together to create a Hollywood style. The bedding is a super soft white cotton linen that is trimmed with a dark gray edge. The pillows are a mix of silk, velvet, and cotton, so lots of textures and patterns combine and work together.

The nightstands were one of the best finds ever. We had a blast looking for them at the Santa Monica Antique Market. You can see how they looked before with the layers of old white paint…It is amazing how an antique piece can be fully restored to it’s original beauty. We used Ebony colored stain by Minwax.

Here is a closer look at the carved legs and feet. They have a claw and ball style and I would date these as a 1930’s Hollywood Regency designs? Any experts out there with ideas?

I promise even better professional photos when we do the actual photo shoot along with a few room updates…we still have some art to arrange and a modern chair in the works.

On another note, if you have a bedroom or guest room that could really use a little extra love contact me. You may be surprised how fun and easy it is to work with a designer to pull it together.

Next, I will show you how I custom designed a large round hanging mirror for a client in Birmingham, Alabama…until next time have a fun and safe 4th of July weekend.

Joining the Lovely Blogger List

I’ve been able to connect with so many great blogger’s in the community lately.

I love their ideas and fresh perspectives on life. I also really loved Rue Magazine’s latest DIY, can’ t wait to try it.

Which is why I became really excited to join Rachel’s blogger list over at Lovely Clusters.

In order to become a part of it, I will share a little bit about myself in an effort as well to reaquaint and show you around my little blogger part of the world.

Pink Pianos by Hilary Hahn is a place to connect the dots between Art, Design, and worldly inspiration. Here I showcase, vintage resurfaced furniture products and reinvented found objects. I love how a cast-off piece of décor becomes a functional work of art. I consider my adventures from Europe and India to tiny cities along the Pacific Coast as the grounds for one massive treasure hunt.

Her abundant adventures from Europe and India to tiny cities along the Pacific Coast provide a constant source of inspiration and finds. She believes you can take a journey anywhere even in your own back yard.

My friend Annie is also a source of inspiration for me as a blogger. Many of the interior designs that I publish are part of a collaboration between the two of us. I know lots of you have seen our latest project the Girl’s Bedroom Metamorphosis. Before I forget, here is a final pick that shows Mia’s bed that we designed.

The duvet cover was custom designed out of hand dyed silk. I am really happy with the way it all came out!

Another blog, that I can not take my eyes off is The Sartorialist, which I know is a favorite among many.

I love to meet other designers, curators, and bloggers.

Nature is a constant inspiration to me!

It’s been so nice to meet other artists and have them share their ideas, inspiration, and opinions. Rachel’s Blogger List is fabulous because it groups bloggers by region helping to connect us with each other and a larger audience.

Headboard Redo

I came across this funky fabulous headboard at a yard sale and decided to give it an upgrade. What attracted me was it’s solid wood frame and carvings set into it’s shapely design.

I immediately applied a light coat of stripper to peel of the varnish and glossy finish. Next, I went to my sander and buffed off the what was left of the coating. Once the wood was clean and bare, I oiled it to hydrate the wood and keep out the dust particles. What’s left was only to apply two thicks coats of latex semi-gloss paint. I was lucky enough to have some left over from a previous project. After apllying to generous coats and working paint into all the crevices of the wood, I used a polyurethane spray sealer to protect the paint job.

In the future, I hope to take more photographs of the process for all to see. Also, expect to see many of my furnishings up for grabs. This one in particular is already sold, but I couldn’t resist sharing the process in case some of you find old wooden headboards. You may find that a coat of white paint really freshens things up!
