Acupuncture Spa Plan + Styling

This was an ideal project to undertake requiring the perfect balance of creative freedom and serenity. A medical office and wellness space lends itself to vital green, clean fibers, and soft palettes. I felt at ease working on this office and would consider the style functional modern organic.

In the picture above, we personalized white cotton IKEA slipcovers with beautifully designed spa pillows out of silky embroidered cotton and camel colored linen backs. The linen was a bargain and the embroidered fabric was a bit of a splurge, but since we stayed on budget with the seating it added a thoughtful touch.

The inner lace pendant helped to create a focal point and soft lighting in the center of the lobby.

I spotted this bench on Overstock, which is now sold out! It was a steal at just over $100 and I think it does the trick when you first walk in the door.

Here it is a few weeks later restyled with a silvery gray seat cushion. Although, I liked it before, this way is certainly more comfortable. I chose gray to balance out the warmth of the natural wood.

For the Doctor’s office. I decided on gray laminate countertops and gray cotton wool cozy chair, a combination of coziness and cleanliness that you desire in a doctor’s visit. The under mount lighting on the floating shelf was chosen to illuminate the workspace when there are elixirs to be mixed. We had the idea to suspend the white cabinets at countertop height to provide a custom workspace for the doctors. The cabinets are part of a sink base, which I had shelves cut to fit inside. The countertop was also customized and bolted the top of the sink base. I think, I am most proud of this piece because it took a bit of creativity to make it work.

Here are a few more vignettes, inlcuding the water and tea cart. A simple way to pull together the overall look of the space was to use all-white shelving and cabinetry.

I loved this little mid-century lamp so much because of it’s shape. Isn’t it just screaming to be on a doctor’s desk or study space? I discovered the HImalayan salt lamps through my client, who showed me their natural beauty and told me about their healing properties.

In the picture at right below, we reused a sturdy console by priming and painting it white to provide visual unity. The framed Mandala quilt belonged to my client already, we found it complimented the Exam Room with it’s symmetry. The warn wood floors and countertops are balanced by the cool gray acupuncture stations and the soft gray walls.

After working on this project, I realized the pleasure it took in designing it. It’s almost as if the space guided me peacefully through the obstacles of design work and left me at ease. Thank you, Tilo Medical for the stress-free journey. I’ll be back to visit you soon.
