Moroccan Mirror DIY

I’d so love to give you a peak at my latest inspiration and current DIY stencil fab project.

I came across these amazing graphics via DesignAmour.

There are so many talented designers out there, I love to discover someone new each week. They have so much going on over there, check out round two of the moroccan graphics, I found there.

What really grabs me are the colors along with symmetry and composition of the designs.

I’d love to find tiles along a similar vein for a bathroom that I’ll be working on soon!

Now for a peak at my current DIY project…

Here is the large square mirror that I inherited from a friend. As much as I liked it’s original finish I wanted to enhance it.

I know it looked cool in it’s orignal form, but I just can’t wait to layer in some more colors and details. I promise to show you when I do

Friday, I will post a finished product along with pictures of a huge art hang that I just did at a Melrose residence. Stay tuned :)

The Secret Life of Objects amidst other curiosities

As far as curiosities go, last weekend I hit the jack pot at the Aaron Cramer: Secret Life of Objects exhibit during the Los Angeles art walk.

The sculptural entryway assemblages were a feast full of wonder from the welded hanging lantern-shaped pendants

to the sculptural vessels woven from Street Sweeper bristles.

and then there were the “Moneyballs” made from from thousands of tiny shreds of discarded treasury notes.

I’m absolutely amazed at the way that Kramer glued those and to that effect.

The Page Museum was also free for the day so I got a glimpse of other green creatures…

Enjoying a swim.

On to the ultimate curiosity; Kaya Toast at Susan Feniger’s restaurant Street. The dish offered thick fried toast with coconut jam, soft-fried egg (which I neglected), dark soy sauce, and white pepper.

What sounds exotic couldn’t taste more delicious. Toast that literally melts in your mouth. Here Katie and Ashish bask in the glow of the orange umbrella.

It’s been yet another fabulous week!

Monday cheer up: Graphic pillows

Hey everybody~ It’s been a fun weekend starting with a trip to Real Food Daily, a delicious vegan restaurant just up the street from us on La Cienega. The food was so tasty and fulfilling, Friday night really set the tone for the  whole weekend, if you know what I mean! Do try it and let me know what ya think!

I wanted to start every week this month with a punch, so I’ve picked out some of my favorite graphic pillows that have caught my eye. Starting with I LOVE VERA, a 1960′s design icon that has been revived for the public!

This green bolster is on SALE at Anthropologie  (if you can believe it!) I actually bought the shorter version in pink because it worked with our living room and I’m luvin’ it. They’ve even made her amazing watercolors into rug designs and upholstery.

Wouldn’t this rug inspire a swim?

Can you believe that Vera Neumann, whose namesake the VeraCompany celebrates, began it all as a scarf designer?

Lately, green is my favorite color and this Kaleidoscope pillow by Jonathan Adler does not disappoint.

Last-but-not-least this teensy little white Geisha Kukiko by myMimi wishes you a cheerful Monday!

There is a world full of curiosities in store for you this week.

Retreat: A boutique hotel

The challenge: To come up with a logo and concept for a boutique hotel.

My solution: RETREAT, a relaxing getaway in the middle of a bustling metropolis.

Upon entering the hotel, venture down a dim corridor and are greeted by the sound of gently flowing water. You are asked to remove your shoes and slide on our comfy slippers courtesy of RETREAT.

At RETREAT, we love relaxing and getting back to basics. Visit our fire circle for a camp style chat with new friends.

Our see-through bar, earthy brass stools, and refreshing mixed drinks should lift the weight of urban dwelling right off your shoulders.

At mealtime, feast on delicious whole foods, while dining amid the company of strangers just like you.

Long tables designed to create an atmosphere of community and laid back conversation. I’d even love to carve totems into these wood timbers to add to the tribal theme.

So, there you have it, the newest addition to my portfolio ;)

I think we all need a place to retreat from the pace of the city.

Facelift: Pink Pianos chair

If you stop by often then you know how I love found objects and a good facelift.

I dug this black and white fabric that I am storing in my garage for a client. I decided to use a pinch of it to recover this sturdy wooden frame. It was missing a seat, so I simply traced the shape onto plywood then cut a new one. Luckily, I had some extra foam and batting to pad it and make it plenty comfy. I chose the glossy black paint to add a modern feel to the retro plaid. For now, she’s sitting pretty in my shop.

Make sure to stop by Wednesday, when I’ll announce the 1-year blogaversary giveaway.

It’s already June, 1 year, and time to celebrate!

Rugs to Inspire

While working on the girl’s bedrooms, I collected my favorite designer rugs for you to see.

I have come a cross so many rug companies that I wanted to share. I tend to shop the usual suspects, Rug Company, Anthropologie, and West Elm. I knew that there was so much more out there, but had no idea where to begin.

This flower petal design looked so amazingly soft. Who wouldn’t like to stand on roses?

I like the texture and scale of this design.

For some color, head over to Dash and Albert. We have one of their organic cotton rugs  in our living room and love it!

We found Second Studio rugs to be affordable rugs but still in league with all off the Designer rugs out there…

Plus, their designs use gray alongside pops of color which can be a brilliant fit in many interiors. When purchasing a rug, it is all about quality and comfort. I flipped for British rug company Henzel.

These rugs are something truly original. Like large scale artworks for you floor. I will some day own one if these rugs. I came across the queen of felt, Mary Ann Williams over at Illu stration.

This orange lotus design gives me a thrill!

It’s hard to believe that PinkPianos has been around for one year my first post in June! Next week, I’ll be hosting a giveaway to celebrate.

If you missed any one of our featured artist series you can read about them here. I hope you are all finding inspiration!

An Artist a Day: Joseph Cornell

Okay, so I admit to not actually personally knowing this artist in my lifetime, but after a long and relaxing Memorial Day weekend, I thought he would be an ideal person to wrap up Artist Tuesdays with his careful curated collage and assemblage work. Thanks to all the artists who participated this month leading up to my one year blog-iversary and first complete series!

Joseph Cornell, born at the turn of the 20th century was known for the collages he created. Often placing boxes inside of boxes and arranging images amongst tiny collections.

His work was collected by many prominent art collectors in his time. Cornell spent most of his life living in Queens with his family.  He also kept some of New York’s most talented ballerinas as his closest friends. Sometimes in his work, these references appear.

I heard that he trolled around flea markets and antiques shops in search of pieces of a bygone era, in this way his art begins a historical recollection.

Doesn’t this remind you of a designer’s inspiration board?

Every time I style my mantle or set up a tableau on my desk his work inspires me, I feel like I’m arranging a narrative, just as Cornell would have.

Or when I look at a toy collection, I get a feel for his style.

You could make your own Cornell box. Shadowboxes are some of my favorite ways to display art these days. I will be doing this in Joelle’s room, working with her to arrange her own collections.

For that I have found, this white 12″ x 12″ Shadowbox frame.

I think it is the perfect depth and shape to hold a collage of memories.

What type of collections do you keep? Please send photos to hilary.hahn@pinkpianos.com and I’d love to share them with other readers here.
